Before entering into costs drafting, Phil Bingham spent 15 years as a litigation fee earner with prestigious London firms of solicitors. He began drawing his own Bills of Costs whilst still working as a fee earner because he thought he could do better than the draftsmen instructed by the firm. He became a full time Costs Draftsman in 1981, forming his own Firm in 1985.

Since then he has been involved in many high profile costs cases, such as De Lorean and Al Fayed v. Hamilton. A significant area of expertise is in the sphere of clinical negligence and he has prepared the Bills of Costs for the Claimants in many six figure awards against the NHSLA and various medical establishments. He successfully argued the various important rulings in Higgs v. Camden & Islington Health Authority (2003) EWHC 15,QBD.

He has represented clients on Detailed Assessment hearings in all parts of the country, including in the Supreme Courts Costs Office (now the Senior Courts Costs Office), the Privy Council and the House of Lords. Phil’s expertise extends to opposing Bills of Costs with many years experience of advising on minimising exposure when the solicitor’s Client faces a Costs Order, including six and seven figure Bills and Detailed Assessments lasting several days.

He is a Fellow of the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen, a Costs Lawyer with Higher Rights of Audience, and an accredited training provider for ALCD.
